I couldn't get the folks from Sony to give me a release date, but they said to look for the new Fat Princess content very soon.
Still, these new characters certainly are fun. The ninja can go through doors like a ghost when he's invisible, so it kind of sucks a warrior doesn't really have a counterattack. If you don't buy the pack and keep playing Fat Princess, you're going to be in matches with people who have the new hats. I tried them out and had fun with them – the special moves add a new dimension to fighting – but I wonder if there's a chance they'll unbalance combat. These hats come from a special machine, and when you put it on, you have a few seconds to choose which class you want to be. The ninja can turn invisible, the giant can scoop enemies up and eat them, and the pirate can call in a cannonball strike.

Each of these classes comes with a special ability that you can only use when you have your special meter full (this recharges over time). The pirate can stab with his sword or fire his one-shot pistol, the ninja can slash or throw ninja stars, and the giant just has massive hands to crush you with or slam for a ground pound. As for the content you'll need to pay for, the new "Fat Roles" are cool. If all die, you all respawn at the castle. If one of you falls in battle, that player will respawn when the group gets to the castle or an outpost the team controls. You need to stick in the same place, although the screen is rather large.
Because you're all on the same screen, you can't run off to different sections of the map. You'll all be on the same team, and you can take the action online or tackle the story mode, which means no more relying on lame AI. You can jump into a game, and three of your in-house friends can pick up controllers, press start and jump into the action. The four-player mode is actually pretty slick.

Patch 1.06 will add a four-player co-op mode to Fat Princess, and "Fat Roles" will add three new classes for players to become.
