How different would such a game be if you ALWAYS had access to the full enemy team on the map? Or, take Mario Kart I haven't played since Double Dash, but I can't imagine having the same experience in battle mode or racing with my friends when I can't see what's going on anymore. In MOBAs, a huge portion of the game is guestimating where the enemy team is going on the map through the fog of war. And team coordination in splitscreen was even stronger, since you're able to gain information about your teammates positions without them ever having to say anything (nevermind the fact that they're probably right next to you.) Whereas modern FPS games are all about communicating and coordinating with your teammates, splitscreen FPS games were all about managing the information available to you from your enemies. A level of mindgames that may dig a bit deeper and more intimate than regular, single screen + voice chat multiplayer. one that cannot exist in today's multiplayer games. However.if you ever actually played any games like this with people who embraced the concept, then an entirely new meta is opened up. It was considered "cheating" to look on someone else's screen and change paths before they kill you with a rocket launcher, or randomly gain a clairvoyant spider sense when you see a sniper reticle homing in on your character. I'm sure most people remember "screenwatching" as an annoying, cheap thing that should be avoided, nevermind that it's almost impossible to avoid doing if you're playing on one TV. Me and a few friends were having a discussion about older gaming when we all realized that couch-play multiplayer FPS/Racing games were completely different games when played splitscreen because you had full access to everything your opponents were doing, and vice versa.
